Tips for a First Piercing
[email protected]2024-06-15T09:33:26-05:00Getting a piercing for the first time can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. This is something we understand and have empathy for as we were ALL in this boat at one point.
Here are some tips and advice that we came up with for individuals getting their first piercings:
Choose a Reputable Piercer:
• Research and choose a professional and experienced piercer that you have heard great things about or with positive reviews. Ensure the establishment follows proper hygiene and safety practices. A piercing studio should always be transparent and willing to answer any of your questions.
Do Your Research:
• Understand the type of piercing you want and research the aftercare requirements. Knowing what to expect can help ease anxiety. We wrote a blog post on what a trip to Almost Famous Body Piercing looks like so you’ll know what to expect when you come in – What a Trip to Almost Famous Body Piercing Looks Like – Almost Famous Body Piercing (almostfamouspiercing.com)
Ask Questions
• Don’t hesitate to ask your piercer any questions you may have. We make ourselves available for questions before you even get your piercing and we will still be here for you during and after. If you message on any of our social media platforms or email us at info@almostfamouspiercing, a piercer will answer any of your questions from pricing to piercing issues and more!
Consider Pain Tolerance
• Different piercings have varying levels of pain. Be realistic about your pain tolerance, and start with a piercing that suits your comfort level if you’re unsure.
Check Identification
• We are required to take identification for anyone being pierced, including minors. If you’re not familiar with the ID requirements for the city or state, let us know and we’ll send them over.
Choose the Right Piercing
• For first-timers, it’s often recommended to start with less invasive piercings, such as earlobe, nostril, or navel piercings. These areas typically have a milder sensation and easier healing.
Eat Well and Stay Hydrated
• Have a light meal before your appointment to prevent lightheadedness or nausea. Having a sweet snack with you can help for if you’re not feeling great afterwards.
Bring a Friend for Support
• Having a friend accompany you can provide emotional support and make the experience more comfortable. We can only allow two people in the piercing suite but one can absolutely be your support person.
Wear Comfortable Clothing
• Dress in loose and comfortable clothing, especially if the piercing is in an area that may be affected by tight or restrictive clothing.
Avoid Alcohol and Blood Thinners
• Avoid alcohol and blood-thinning medications before your appointment, as they can increase bleeding and make it difficult for your body to clot at the piercing site.
Relax and Breathe
• Take deep breaths to relax before and during the piercing. Many people find that controlled breathing helps manage discomfort. The piercer will work with you on breathing as well! We’ve got some other tips for remaining calm in our ‘Calming Pre-Piercing Fears’ blog – Calming Those Pre-Piercing Fears – Almost Famous Body Piercing (almostfamouspiercing.com)
Follow Aftercare Instructions • We go over thorough aftercare instructions with you after your piercing is complete and we will provide you with written aftercare instructions to take home as well. You’ll want to follow them diligently to promote proper healing and reduce the risk of infection.
Don’t Touch or Rotate the Jewelry • These two are very important. You’ll want to avoid touching your new piercing with dirty hands. This will DRASTICALLY lower your chances of infection. You will also want to resist the temptation to rotate the jewelry. This used to be a thing that was recommended but with time, we figured out that is actually delays healing because you are tearing the new tissue trying to heal each time you do it. This can also unnecessarily introduce bacteria to the area.
Be Patient
• Healing times vary for different piercings. Things in the upper cartilage portion of the year are popular but they also take the longest to heal. Things like the nostril, eyebrow, and ear lobes are some of the quickest to heal. Be patient, and don’t rush the process.
Monitor for Signs of Infection
• Keep an eye out for any signs of infection, such as excessive redness, swelling, pain that is worse than when you got it pierced, a fever with no other flu-like symptoms, or drainage that is green and/or bloody in color. If you suspect a problem, you can contact us for advice but this may require a trip to the doctor for antibiotics. While infection is fairly rare, it can happen so it’s great to know how to lower the chances.
Remember, everyone’s experience with getting a piercing is unique. With proper care and attention, most piercings heal without complications. If you have any questions about your next piercings or concerns during the healing process, don’t hesitate to reach out to us for guidance. We’re always happy to help!
