Back to School but Make it Sparkle : Piercing Tips for the New Semester

Whether you’re heading into another year of school or stepping onto a college campus for the first time, back-to-school season is all about fresh starts – and what better way to start the year off than with a piercing glow-up?
From bold new piercings to subtle jewelry swaps, now is the perfect time to refresh your look and make sure your piercing game is on point. Here’s your piercing-ready checklist for fall:

✨ 1. Thinking About a New Piercing?
The start of the school year is a popular time for new piercings, and for good reason. It’s a fresh chapter. Here are a few ideas to match your style and school’s vibe:
– Lobe or second lobe piercings: Great for a subtle change that adds dimension to your ear stack.
– Helix or conch: Something different but still school-appropriate for most dress codes.
– Nostril or septum: For students looking to make a bolder statement.
– Stacked or curated ears: Add multiple piercings strategically for a stylish, layered look.
Pro tip: If you’re getting pierced right before school starts, just know that the piercing may not look exactly like your inspiration photo right away. Piercings will be red and swollen during the healing process but being consistent with your aftercare can help this.

 2. Jewelry Switch-Up? Yes, Please.
Maybe you’re not ready for a new piercing but you are ready for a change. Switching out your jewelry is an easy way to upgrade your vibe without needing a needle.
-Swap to gold or titanium for a more elevated look. Go minimalist with tiny studs or huggie hoops for a clean, polished appearance.
-Try charms or unique threadless ends to show a little more personality
-Match your jewelry to your outfits for those back-to-school selfies
✅ Reminder: Only change jewelry if your piercing is fully healed. Not sure? Ask your piercer!

3. Refresh Your Aftercare Routine
Busy school days mean you’ll want your piercing care to be low-maintenance and effective.
Here’s what to keep in mind:

  • Keep sea salt and soap on hand in your backpack or dorm for quick clean.
  • Avoid touching piercings during class or while studying (easier said than done, but worth it!)
  • Keep hair, scarves, and headphones away from healing piercings to prevent snagging
Especially if you’re living in a dorm, make sure your bedding is clean and your earbuds aren’t spreading bacteria. Piercings + germs = bad semester.

4. Know the Rules
If you’re in high school, check your school’s dress code or piercing policy. Some schools are more strict than others, so if you’re thinking about facial piercings (like eyebrow, nostril, or lip), it’s worth knowing the rules ahead of time.
If you plan to play sports this year, be sure to check in with them on their piercing policies as well! Some piercings, especially those in the cartilage portion of the ear, take longer to heal which means the original jewelry has to stay in place for longer.
Workaround: Retainers or clear jewelry may be an option once your piercing is fully healed but never swap healing jewelry just to hide a piercing. Talk to your piercer first.

5. Plan Ahead
If you have read through and think you’re ready for a piercing or a change in jewelry, the next is making sure you have everything so that when you stop in, it’s smooth sailing. First is identification. We require identification for anyone being pierced, including minors. Since we have locations in different states, our policies vary a bit so if you’re not familiar, please reach out via email (info@almostfamouspiercing.com) or by messaging us on social and we will get that information to you.
Next up, we don’t do any appointments in advance so you can stop in when you’re able to fill out paperwork and pick out jewelry and then our team will get you added to the piercing schedule, and let you know how long of a wait there is, if there is one. You’re welcome to call before coming in to make sure we’re not booked out which can happen on weekends or evenings.

Final Thoughts
Your look is part of your self-expression and piercings are a powerful (and fun!) way to own that. Whether you’re going bold with a fresh septum or just upgrading your ear stack, take care of your piercings and they’ll look amazing all school year long.
