What Is A Daith Piercing?

A Daith (pronounced “doth,” but also “day-th” in some areas) piercing is one made with a hollow needle through the crus helix portion of the ear, the fold of cartilage behind the tragus and just above the ear canal.

It’s a beautiful piercing that almost looks as if it is floating in the center of the ear since the entrance and exit points aren’t always completely visible.

Healing Up

Since a Daith piercing is a cartilage piercing, much like the tragus, it’s got a roughly equivalent healing timeframe. Even with a great aftercare routine, you can expect the Daith to take six months to one year and sometimes longer to fully heal.

A Daith piercing also requires the same aftercare as any other ear piercing. When pierced at Almost Famous Body Piercing, we send you home with the products that you will need to take care of and heal your new addition. You’ll get a packet of ‘Soak-It!’sea salt in which you mix with water to soak your piercing. We typically recommend using a dixie cup or shot glass to soak piercings but since the Daith is a little more difficult to reach, it’s usually easier to use a shallow bowl or a coffee mug to soak the entire ear. When you’re able to soak the piercing, the solution can not only clean the surface, but also flush any drainage out of the inside of the piercing. You’ll also use ‘Wash-It!’ glycerin soap to clean the outside of the piercing. You gently lather some soap with water and work it around the piercing to remove and shampoo/conditioner residues, hair products, and drainage from the site.

Part of a Whole

We’ve had many people inquire about Daith piercings and ask if they offer relief from migraines. While there is no factual evidence to support this, it is said that the ‘crus helix’ portion of the ear is a pressure point and as with acupuncture or acupressure, placing a needle or piercing in this area can stimulate a reflex point which essentially improves the flow of energy in that particular part of the body. This can help alleviate pain. With that being said, there is no guarantee. Even if it doesn’t, you will have a beautiful new ear piercing that you can enjoy for years to come.

The term for the piercing itself derives from the Hebrew word da’at, or knowledge, and most often associated with the Kabbalah’s “Tree of Life.”

Beyond this, some Hindu traditions would suggest that proper Daith jewelry would act as a sort of spiritual filter, allowing the wearer to better recognize the truth when it was heard.

Celebrity Sightings

Looking around, it doesn’t seem like there are a lot of celebrities currently sporting a Daith piercing. Zoe Kravitz, daughter of singer Lenny Kravitz, is certainly one. So too is Kylie Jenner, who can be seen exhibiting a heart shaped piece of jewelry in her piercing.

However, Daith Piercings have become about as commonplace as a Nostril piercing. We get tons of clients in wanting one for a variety of reasons.
